Governance is the process by which societies make and implement key decisions.

The Health Management and Policy Governance Lab at the University of Michigan brings together experts studying the effects of governance and politics on health policy decisionmaking, implementation and outcomes.

Governance Lab collaborators -our faculty colleagues, current undergraduate, masters and doctoral students, and alumni conducting policy-engaged research- work on a variety of topics in the field of health policy, including communicable disease and pandemic-related research, drug policy, tobacco control, climate change, gun policy, health security, health systems strengthening and healthcare payment reform.

Working together, we aim to:

  • Promote the policy-engaged research of HMP colleagues, students and alumni, and amplify its impact

  • Create a stronger sense of community, collaboration and joint purpose among policy-engaged HMP faculty, alumni and students

  • Provide practical training and mentorship in policy engagement for HMP students at all levels via Fellowships and other collaborative opportunities

  • Promote public understanding of the political determinants of health
